Home is Where the Heart Is

Over the last decade, there has been a strong trend toward the minimalist look. But this gets a bit boring and dull doesn’t it? With all the stresses of work – pressured deadlines, commuting in traffic, tiresome meetings – it’s fun to arrive home to vibrant beauty to help you unwind from your stressful day.

Let’s take a look at some simple ways to brighten your day through your home. Afterall, as the saying goes “home is where the heart is”, so let’s make ours a happy heart in a happy home.

Colour harmony

Creating a colour harmony in your home does require some planning. Investigating the various colour schemes is helpful during the planning stage. Here are just two of the many options to give you an idea:

  • Complementary Colour Scheme – Colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel are considered to be complementary colours and work well when only these two colours are used. (Example: Purple and Yellow). Make one of the colours the dominant colour, while the other one is the supporting colour.
  • Analogous Colour Scheme – Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. They usually match well and create serene and comfortable designs. (Example: Blue-Green; Green; Yellow-Green).
A splash of colour

If you already have the minimalist look in your home, why not consider adding a splash of colour? White or plain furniture can create a dynamic contrast when coupled with one single vibrant colour in accessories. For example, let’s choose turquoise. A delicately versatile colour that can either accentuate a casual seaside patio or make any living room defiantly opulent when coupled with metallics. A white sofa with delicate white drapes, combined with turquoise scatter cushions, lamps and vases, and complemented by a vast mirror with a metallic frame and metallic light fixtures, transforms ordinary into extraordinary.

Get textured

Who says that all your furniture has to have uniform stripes or colours? Getting creative with different textures, shapes, styles and colours can really bring a lot of fun into your home. When shopping for scatter cushions, select a variety of patterns and images. A helpful hint is to select cushions that still have one common colour to create a sense of uniformity, even though each of them is unique.

Your home is the place where you rejuvenate, relax and unwind. It is also the place where you laugh and make memories with your family. So bring in a little vibrance and some creative elements that resonate with your uniqueness.
