The Vibrance that is Yellow

Running through a field of yellow flowers while feeling the warm sun on your skin. Yellow is all about happiness and a sense of freedom, while awakening our creativity. It is a bright, vibrant and energising colour. Bright yellow is synonymous with positivity and ambition. Psychologists believe that yellow influences the left side of our brain, enhancing deep thinking, analysis and problem-solving capabilities.

With so many varying hues from pale pastel to zesty lemon and the ever-popular canary yellow, it can sometimes feel like a daunting task to select the correct hue for your home. Similarly, opting for a statement wall versus a few subtleornaments is an important decision to make.

We’ve created some key tips and suggestions to help you decide how best to introduce this beautiful colour into your home.

1. A Bold Statement

While this striking furniture may seem too bright in a shop display, notice how it becomes perfectly complemented with the monochromatic greys and whites. This combination allows the yellow furniture to now become a bold statement that comfortably fits into the space. In these examples, the grey walls and rug are not a plain surface. This stark contrast adds to the boldness of the space in a beautifully subtle way. It forms a sense of momentum that is ideal for igniting those creative ideas.

2. Perfect Pastels

A pale pastel yellow is a great option if you prefer the more subtle approach and can enhance a room when combined with the correct elements. While a dull yellow has been said to represent caution, sickness, and jealousy, this only applies if it is incorrectly used. Similarly, pastels can blend in too easily, so every element of the room needs to be evaluated, and the correct shade of pastel needs to be selected. Think about where you want to introduce the pastel yellow and why. Pastel yellow is popular for creating a feeling of relaxation and tranquility, so it would not be the ideal hue to select for a study or workspace. If for example, your favourite reading room is located in a well-lit space where you enjoy sipping on a cuppa while reading in the afternoon sun, then a pastel yellow becomes the perfect complement to this space. The sun’s rays will illuminate the room, and instead of reflecting off a bright white wall, the pastel yellow will soften the rays and create a soothing glow. If we then refer to the colour wheel, yellow’s opposite colour is purple. In this space, the addition of a purple throw and a lavender plant creates a harmonious symphony that is your perfect retreat after a long day.

3. Complementary Colours

For a refreshingly bold style, consider combining a lemon yellow with turquoise, after all complementary colours are not only those that appear opposite each other on the colour wheel. Since yellow is synonymous with energy and creativity, it is typically not a popular colour for bedrooms. However, a sleek white and metallic-style bedroom would be perfectly complemented with yellow and turquoise cushions and décor.

Yellow: a beautiful colour that is waiting to be welcomed into your home.
